About the event

Balance the emotional, mental and physical load in your household by spending a weekend with your partner and a professional counselor, Certified Fair Play Facilitator, and Certified Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapist Vanessa Knight. Meal add-ons from locally-owned downtown KC restaurants are available in the registration. Each couple will receive materials and printable Fair Play cards to create a customized deck for your own household. If you have never read Fair Play, the book, that's ok! We will give the option in registration to add on the book and official card deck, but if you already have the book/deck, bring it along.

If you are looking for the virtual session, June 8-10: https://www.securecounselingclinic.org/event-details-registration/virtual-fair-play-method-intensive-3-day-live-workshop-for-couples-2024-06-08-18-00

Spend a weekend of intensive learning about stopping conflict patterns in romantic attachment relationships (Emotionally-Focused Couples work, Hold Me Tight by Sue Johnson, PhD) and the Fair Play Method (FPM) for managing household labor, based on the bestselling book Fair Play by Eve Rodsky. You'll receive 12-15 hours of professional time with Vanessa Knight, LCPC, NCC, CCMHC at a fraction of the cost of 1:1 coaching or counseling time and walk away with a fire hose of knowledge, resources, ideas, and encouragement! Additional 1:1 support after the intensive is always an option if you and your partner get stuck or want to continue the journey in customized sessions exclusively for your household.

Here's the plan:

  • Optionally arrive early Friday evening at 5:15-5:30 if you'd like to have dinner and settle in.
  • Friday evening officially begins at 6pm. 6-9pm will cover communication patterns in conflict that drive negative emotion and keep the Method from getting started in the first place, as well as a basic introduction to the "why, when, and how" of the FPM.
  • Optional early arrival on Saturday morning 8-9am, and we will have a breakfast for those who wish to add on eat together.
  • Official start is at Saturday 9am with presentation and our working day. Saturday's content is all about implementing the FPM, running into snaffoos and fails, fixing them, and maintaining connection and respectful, loving communication while working through the realities you face together. Lunch add-on is available on Saturday.
  • Sunday is optional, but strongly recommended! Vanessa will be in the office for "Office Hours" from 1pm-4pm Sunday for workshop attendees to continue co-working on FPM together. Tables and workspaces will remain set up, and Vanessa will be available for in-the-moment consultation during Office Hours.

Note about Diversity:

This workshop is for couples and addresses domestic equity in the home, with or without kids. Because of historical societal norms, these issues will most often show up in heterosexual relationships between CIS-gendered men and women. However, the balance of mental, emotional, and physical labor is applicable to corporate environments, chore management with kids, LGBTQAI+ couples+, groups of volunteers, and any other relationships that require equitable division of labor. This workshop will focus on traditional gender norms and balance in hetero couples. Others are welcome to attend with this understanding! All are welcome.

Curious how cost is established?

Clinician calculates the number of professional hours x normal hourly rate, then divides it by the anticipated number of couples participating in workshop to create a reduced hourly fee that is shared by several couples together to create a more cost-effective option for couples than full therapy rates because it is shared (for example, $25/hour rather than $200/hour for private sessions). Clinician takes time away from regular session hours and replaces it with workshop hours that reach households that need intensive help and a cost-effective option while still working with a qualified professional. Cost-sharing for a clinician’s time in this way allows you to have professional attention, get healthy conversation started with your partner with an onsite professional, learn and absorb new ideas, and hear other households stories and solutions to get more brainstorms! We cover our meals with a group order or brown bag it!
